Churros is a crunchy and sweet dessert from Spanish countries. It is generally made by frying the light pastry dough, generally Choux. Churros are mostly in prism shape and piped through different shaped nozzles to give them the contours. Churros go well as Dessert, while they are sold as street food in many countries.

This recipe scores more than regular recipe because it uses baking instead of frying cutting down the usage of oil. Also it uses whole wheat instead of pastry dough adding to the nutrient content.

Ingredients

  • Water – 1 cup 200 ml
  • Unsalted Butter – 50 g
  • Brown Sugar – 2 tbsp 35 g
  • Salt – ¼ tsp 0.5 g
  • Whole Wheat Flour – 1 cup 133 g
  • Baking powder – 1 tsp 0.5 g
  • Eggs - 2 100 g
  • Vanilla Extract – 1 tsp 5 ml
  • Castor Sugar – ½ cup 50 g
  • Cinnamon Powder – 1 tsp 0.5 g

How to make Baked Churros

  • Heat water, butter, brown sugar and salt in a pan until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved.
  • Add flour and baking powder and whisk well to make a dough.
  • Cook for a minute till the dough tightens a bit and starts to leave the sides of the pan.
  • Remove the dough from heat and let it cool for 5 minutes.
  • Whisk eggs and vanilla extract in a bowl.
  • Add the egg mixture over the dough and whisk vigorously till well combined.
  • Fill the batter in a piping bag fitted with large star shaped nozzle.
  • Pre heat the oven to 180 degrees C.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Pipe long and straight churros on the baking tray.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes until they are slightly browned.
  • Mix castor sugar and cinnamon powder in a plate.
  • Coat the churros from this mixture on all the sides.
  • Serve hot with Chocolate Fudge Sauce.
