Lentil Burger with Mexican Spices Recipe

A healthy burger recipe with all the goodness of lentils and vegetables. Enjoy this burger with a Mexican twist without feeling guilty.

    • 1 cup moong dal, uncooked
    • 1 small potato, boiled, peeled and mashed
    • 1 red onion, sliced
    • 1 green bell pepper, cut into bite size
    • ¼ cup frozen corn kernels, thawed
    • 1 inch cinnamon stick (dalchini)
    • 1 bay leaf (Tej patta)
    • 2 teaspoon ground cumin (jeera)
    • 2 teaspoon ground coriander
    • 3 teaspoon taco seasoning
    • Salt
    • Mini burger buns or pav
    • Lettuce leaves
    • Sour cream
    • Juice of 1 lemon
    • Saffola Oil for pan frying the patties

How to make Lentil Burger with Mexican Spices

    • In a pressure cooker cook moong dal with 2 cups of water, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp ground coriander, bay leaf, cinnamon stick and ½ tsp salt. Don’t cook the lentils completely….about 3 to 4 whistles on medium heat
    • Once lentils are done, remove the bay leaf and cinnamon stick from it and strain to remove the water. Let cool completely
    • Once the lentils are cooled, place them in a blender and pulse for a few seconds to form a granular mixture it should resemble the texture of bread crumbs. Keep aside
    • In a pan sauté onions and bell peppers with little oil for 3 to 4 minutes. Add 1 tsp taco seasoning and stir to mix well. Turn the heat off, keep aside
    • In a large mixing bowl add lentils, onion and bell pepper mixture, potato, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp ground coriander, 2 tsp taco seasoning, salt and corn. Mix well to combine all the ingredients together. Taste and adjust the seasonings
    • Using your palms make patties out of the mixture – make sure to match their size with the burger buns that you are using
    • Pan fry the patties with saffola oil on medium low heat. Keep aside
    • To Assemble the Burger
    • Add sour cream to a bowl and add ½ tsp ground cumin and juice of ½ a lemon. Stir to mix well
    • Slightly toast the burger bun on a pan. Add some lettuce leaves on half of the bun. On the other bun place a lentil patty and a generous dollop of the sour cream. Close the buns and secure it with a toothpick. Serve with some hot salsa
