Patra Ni Macchi Recipe

Almost all coastal states of India have one steamed fish recipe that is made using the parcel method like the famous fish-en-papillote. This recipe of Patra-ni-machhi literally means fish cooked in a leaf, that is banana leaf, a famous Parsi delicacy.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Saffola oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 15-20 mint leaves (pudhina)
  • 5-6 twigs of coriander
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1 fillet of Pomfret
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 banana leaves

How to make Patra Ni Macchi

  • Add mint leaves, coriander leaves, garlic cloves, green chillies, cumin seeds, lime juice, salt, Saffola oil and water in a mixer. Blend these to form a smooth paste.
  • Once blended keep the paste aside.
  • Take a banana leaf and open it out completely.
  • Place the Pomfret fillet in the middle of the banana leaf. Using a spoon, scoop out the paste and put in on top of the fillet.
  • Cover the fillet by applying the paste on both sides. Wrap the banana leaf around the fish and seal it tight.
  • Place the fish in a steamer vessel and steam it for 15-20 mins.
  • Once steamed remove the fish from the steamer and unwrap it. 
  • Serve Hot!
