Ingredients

  • 1 cup of moong or masoor dal or both
  • 200g pumpkin, cut into cubes
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1 lime juice
  • 1 cup coriander leaves, finely chopped

 

For Seasoning

 

  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon jeera
  • 1 slit green chilli or 2 dry red chillies

How to make Yellow Dal

  • To begin making the Punjabi Dal Tadka recipe, we will first cook the dal along with turmeric powder, onions, pumpkin, ginger and salt along with 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker or saucepan till the dal becomes completely soft
  • Once cooked, whisk the dal and vegetables with a blender until smooth
  • Next, heat the ghee in a heavy bottomed saucepan, add in the jeera, red/green chillies into it and stir them around, until they are roasted well
  • When the jeera begins to crackle, pour the tadka into the cooked dal and stir it around
  • The consistency of the dal can be adjusted at this stage, by adding water if required. Check for salt required as well, and give the dal a brisk boil
  • When done, turn off the heat, stir in the lemon juice and garnish the dal with coriander leaves
  • This delicious Dal Tadka or Yellow Dal can be served with rice, parathas or rotis accompanied with Aloo Simla Mirch ki Sabzi and Moong Sprouts Salad
